X-Project is an X-Men movieverse RPG on Livejournal. Set after X2, we've been running since May 2003 and use a combination of in-character journals and email/IM logs. There's a number of settings for a range of play, whatever your preference, and while we accept new characters we strongly encourage people to adopt one of our orphans.

I've been stalking the game on LJ for several years now. But every time I start to write an application, I lose the nerve to actually finish it and send it in.

You should give us a chance. We're not scary, I promise. If you've got questions about stuff just shoot off an email to the mods, they're happy to answer questions and help guide you along. One of the previously played characters could be easier since they have built in connections already established and not all of them have a ton of game canon. There's also plenty of character that have never shown up and starting from scratch can be easier for some people who are more intimidated by game history than forging IC connections. The wiki is insanely organized and helpful and the mods will work with you to help adjust power levels and history to fit with game canon. They're pretty patient with that stuff. And the community is insanely welcoming to new players.

Which is my really long version of: C'mon, just take a deep breath and do it! :D

I'm seriously considering it. Again. It seems like it has become a bi-annual affair. Actually, I commented on this post because Wisdom was one of the characters I seriously considered apping for when he was dropped a few years back.

I do want to adopt one of the 'orphans', but existing backstories are always intimidating especially when I don't think my playing style is anywhere near the original player's. Research has never been my strong point either. And then there are real-life obligations and issues to consider. /waffles

(This is the point of the internal debate at which I usually throw my hands in the air and give up). X)

Voice is certainly a difficult thing to approach. In the end the mods (and the rest of the game) knows that no adopting player will manage to perfectly replicate the original players writing style and voice. The important thing is to get it approximate enough and usually intervening time between when the character was last played and current time allows for enough development to account for changes in voice and writing style. Wisdom had the same player for the six years he was in game so it's understandable that he might be a bit intimidating to adopt despite desire. You could always reserve him for your second character, that way you have a handle on the game and community more before delving into someone with such extensive history. Find someone lighter on the history for a first character, it's less daunting that way.

Hey, tons of players have a load of real life obligations so if it takes you a while then it takes you a while. Once you're in activity requirements are actually pretty light.

If you decide to leave Pete as an intended second character and want help finding someone to look into for a first character who is lighter in terms of established history with a less distinctive voice I'd be happy to help point you at some people.

Hey Jillian, I'm Cozza (or Nichole, I pop up on our wiki as both), one of the mods. Shiro is certainly less distinctive in terms of voice, I think, though you obviously want to be sure you've got a decent grasp on Japanese culture before tackling him.

What sorts of things are you looking to play? What types of plots and character connections, personality, etc? Shiro and Pete are, obviously, widely different characters in XP.

Hi Cozza. No worries there; I'm fairly decent at Chinese and Japanese culture.

I can play a variety of characters, though I tend to prefer male ones and shy away from those with bright and sparkly personalities who make friends with everyone and their dads. Not picky, plot-wise, though nothing too complicated to begin with.

Surly/selectively friendly males we've got plenty of.

Do you have a particular age range you prefer writing? (i.e. college age, 30+, 25-30, under 22?)

Do you want someone who has a history of being involved with a team or someone less affiliated so you can figure out where you want to go more freely once you have the character in play? (X-Force centers in espionage, X-Factor in detective cases, and the X-Men, well, are the X-Men) It's also fine to be unaffiliated, though you wind up with fewer plot opportunities generally.

I'd rather have them at least in college and no younger. Am flexible in the upward range. Would also prefer a history of being involved with a team for the given reason.
